Revolutionizing the Nuclear Industry

A Case Study on Unleashing the Power of AI for Monumental Efficiency Gains

The Problem

A leading nuclear power company was struggling with the challenge of digitizing its plants, specifically in work management. The company had a significant backlog of tasks that needed prioritization, and it needed a way to leverage its existing digital portfolio and identify potential areas of improvement. Despite having extensive work done by their digital team, the company was experiencing difficulty in identifying knowledge gaps and undocumented workflows that could be valuable for use cases.

The Approach

An experienced research and strategy service provider was engaged to help streamline the process. The service provider began by mapping user journeys to unify all prior work and knowledge, capturing an understanding of the current digital portfolio to leverage all previous work done by the company's digital team.

They worked collaboratively with the company to review all prior work, identifying knowledge gaps, undocumented workflows, and user journeys. The service provider also conducted a tech review to determine the level of effort and scope required to build each use case, design algorithms for AI and data science use cases.

Furthermore, the service provider reviewed asset suites and cloud services to determine any limitations and conducted workshops with the company to determine the next steps. The aim was to create a data-driven strategy that could combine information from various sources, applications, and formats for valuable business insights.

The Solution

The service provider developed a roadmap for driving change, focusing on work management. Opportunities were prioritized based on potential business impact and ease of implementation. The approach included leveraging prior work to identify initial opportunities for improvement, reviewing previously identified opportunities and workflows, investigating knowledge gaps, developing current and future state workflows, and creating a discovery report.

The Results

The roadmap resulted in several key findings and actionable initiatives for the company. It included opportunities crafted through a review of the service provider's previous work with the company, interviews with the company's subject matter experts, and an examination of the company's governance and procedures.

The roadmap outlined a suggested order for future project implementation and identified activities workers could engage in if administrative burdens were relieved with strategic automation. In total, the project identified dozens opportunities for innovation, with an estimated nearly 1,000,000 hours in annual opportunity savings. This streamlined approach to digitization of the company's plants resulted in significant time and cost savings, and set the stage for future innovations.
